PFC Arthur B. McKay Memorial Scholarship

Each year, the Knights of Columbus select a student to receive the Private Art McKay Memorial Scholarship to support their pursuit of higher education. This scholarship fund was established in memory of Private Art McKay, honoring his legacy of service, faith, and commitment to community. Through this award, the Knights continue to encourage and invest in the future of our youth.

Arthur (Art) B. McKay was born on February 20, 1983 in Miami, Fla. Art’s family later moved to Hartwell and he graduated from Hart County High School in 2001. Art was also a devout Catholic and active parishioner and altar server at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Shortly after completing basic training at Parris Island, S.C., Art came to Sacred Heart proudly wearing his dress uniform for the entire congregation to see. Art also served as a lay reader while stationed at Paris Island.

Art was serving as an ammunition technician stationed at Camp Fugi, in Gotemba, Japan when he was severely injured by an explosion on March 5, 2002. Art waged a long battle with brain trauma and its complications that eventually took his life. He genuinely loved the Marine Corps and lived a life of Honor, Courage and Commitment until he drew his last breath.

Art’s awards include the National Defense Service Medal and Rifleman badge. Art died on September 20, 2006 at the VA Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was 26 years young.
